Community Resources

TRANSPORTATION
The Yosemite Area Regional Transportation System (YARTS) serves Mariposa County and Yosemite with daily service (1-877-989-2787).
Highway 140 is a designated AMTRAK Route to Yosemite with rail service 35 miles away in Merced.
Mariposa County Transit operates two systems. Public Transportation is available through Dial-A-Ride and the Senior and VA system structured to the special needs of seniors and veterans. Both systems run Monday through Friday. For information and schedules phone 966-5315 or 966-RIDE.

SENIOR ACTIVITY CENTER
Programs for Seniors are provided by Mariposa County at the Senior Citizen Center in Mariposa. Meals are available at the center with home delivery available. Meals are also available in Coulterville. For details call (209) 966-5315.

BUSINESS AND INDUSTRY
Recreation and retirement are the main industries in Mariposa County. More than 3.4 million visitors to Yosemite each year plus the fall, winter and spring interest in the historic towns and countryside of Mariposa, create a varied economy based on tourism. Small business, light manufacturing, and home enterprise find a welcome home.

Agriculture consists of livestock raising, exceptional wine grape production, wineries, herb farms and custom gardens providing produce for summer Farmers Markets. Land development and construction employs a number of citizens in the county.

Business assistance programs are available, including site selection, business retention, job training program, free business consulting program, seminars, ombudsperson program,  workshops, and roundtables.

ARTS AND CULTURE
A significant number of fine artists live and work in and around Mariposa County. The presence of Yosemite only serves as a stimulant to the artist. The diverse climates and elevations, the history and the landscape inspire artists, both residents and visitors.

The Mariposa County Arts Council provides a diverse program for schools, sponsors the Mariposa Symphony and has offices and a gallery on 5th St. in Mariposa.

AIRPORT
The Mariposa/Yosemite Airport is located four miles north of Mariposa on Hwy 49N at Mt. Bullion. It has a single runway of 3,300 ft., 60 ft. wide and is generally above the winter fog of the San Joaquin Valley.

The Terminal Building is open 7 days a week, 8AM to 5PM April through November, and 9AM to 4 PM winter months. Aviation fuels, tie downs and rental cars are available, although it is best to call ahead to be certain of availability. Many flyers visit Yosemite by picking up a rental car for the 1-hour trip to the Park. (209) 966-2143

MEDICAL CARE
Mariposa County is fortunate to have complete healthcare offerings. In Mariposa is John C. Fremont Healthcare District and Clinic. This hospital has the only 24-hour Emergency Room in Mariposa and Eastern Madera Counties. Located at 5189 Hospital Rd. (209) 966-3631.

In north Mariposa, laboratory, cardiopulmonary, respiratory therapy, CT scan and MRI services are available through the District.

The District also offers Home Health, Hospice, private duty and long-term care nursing services, as well as mammography, outpatient surgery, ultrasound, and chemotherapy service.

The latest contribution from the District is a clinic that has been established through at Greeley Hill in North County.  This clinic will prove very helpful to the residents and visitors in the area for immediate care. 

The Mariposa Indian Health Clinic is in Mariposa next to John C. Fremont Hospital. Not only developed for Native Americans, both the Health Clinic and Dental Clinic are available for anyone needing service. Located at 5192 Hospital Rd. the clinics are open 8AM to 6PM Monday through Friday and can be contacted at 742-6144.

For visitors to Yosemite National Park the Yosemite Clinic is available for Emergency Services 24-hours a day, and for Family Practice and Dental 8AM to 5PM winter months and 8AM to 7PM during the summer.

Mercy Ambulance is available in Mariposa County with units stationed in Mariposa and Coulterville. The Yosemite Clinic provides ambulance service, which is backed up by the National Park Service and Mercy Ambulance.

FIRE SERVICES
CALFIRE and the Mariposa County Fire Department share responsibilities for Fire Services in Mariposa County. As with all emergency services, call 911. Appropriate responses will come from either agency.

SHERIFF
The Mariposa County Sheriff’s Department responds to emergency services by calling 911. For other services, call 966-3615.

EDUCATION
Mariposa County Unified School District offers a diverse educational program. There are seven elementary schools, one community school for 7-12 grades, one comprehensive high school in Mariposa, and two smaller high schools in Coulterville and in Yosemite/El Portal.

Spring Hill School serves as the alternative education opportunity school, and on the same site is the Mariposa County Independent Learning School, which assists home scholars.

Jessie B. Fremont Community School in Hornitos provides service for students with special needs. Merced College and the University of California Campus in Merced offer higher education available to Mariposa students.

UTILITIES
Telephone
Sierra Telephone, 966-3636, provides telephone service for the south side of Mariposa County.

On the north side, for the communities of Lake Don Pedro, Coulterville, Bear Valley and Greeley Hill the phone service is provided by SBC, (800) 310-2355.

On the western side, in the town of Hornitos, telephone service is provided by TDS Telecom, (360) 263-1154.

Internet Services 
Are also provided by Sierra Tel Internet, (877) 638-7787 and Iron Mountain Systems, 742-5000. Mariposa County has an extensive fiber optic infrastructure that benefits high-tech and home-based businesses.
Television
In populated areas there are cable services available. In outlying areas satellite systems are common. Mountain tops also receive signals from major metropolitan areas.

Electricity
Pacific Gas and Electric provides power for the county. For service, call (800) 743-5000.

Water
If you live in the town of Mariposa your water is provided by the Mariposa Public Utility District, 966-2515.

If you live on acreage you have your own well. In Coulterville and Yosemite West the county runs a community water district.

Sewer
If you live in the town of Mariposa your sewer is provided by the Mariposa Public Utility District, 966-2515.

If you live on acreage you have your own septic tank. In Coulterville, Yosemite West, Mariposa Pines and Don Pedro the county runs a community sewer district.

Propane
Since there aren’t any natural gas lines running to the foothills, people rely on propane. A variety of private companies, listed in this directory and the phone book, provide deliveries.

Trash Services
The county operates landfill sites throughout the area where people can deliver their own trash for a nominal fee. There is also private trash collection services.
