Business Improvement District (BID) tax

Posted by: Mariposa Chamber on Wednesday, September 8, 2010 at 12:45:49 pm Comments (3)

Mariposa County uses a Business Improvement District (BID) tax to help fund the Tourism Bureau. This BID tax is assessed at only transient occupancy businesses located with-in Mariposa County. The over night guest tax collected contributes funds to the Tourism Bureau so the it can work better to attract more over night guests.

QUESTION: How would you feel about a second BID tax being assessed over a smaller district, perhaps just the township of Mariposa, with the caveat that the funds be directed at only public improvements with in this smaller district?

Transient occupancy businesses within the district would be exempt from this additional BID tax.

The Coyote Springs Guest Ranch held their annual Western Fair over the Memorial Day weekend, Friday 28th through Monday 31st. Did this event have any effect on your business? If so, how?

Also The BMW Club of Northern California camped at the fairgrounds in Mariposa for the Memorial Day weekend. Did their 700 plus members have any effect on your business during this time? If so, how? Did they bring in local coupons?

Do you know who won the Civil War?  Do you know why?  Are you planning to attend the reenactment of the Civil War this weekend?  You might learn something you didn't already know and meet some people you've never met (i.e. Abraham Lincoln, Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, Gen. Stonewall Jackson, Gen. Robert E Lee, Col. Arthur Fremantle)

Should Mariposa Allow Franchises to Set Up Businesses in Our Community?

Posted by: Peter Schimmelfennig on Friday, April 2, 2010 at 5:44:53 pm Comments (30)

Should Mariposa allow franchises to set up businesses in our community?   I need your opinion. The Chamber represents you, the businesses in Mariposa.  It is important that I know what you think so when I am approached I can relay your thoughts.

A large Franchise would be hiring local people to work, creating jobs.
There would be extended business hours for tourists.

A large Franchise would take away from the "local" feel of our small town.
The corporate profits would go out of town.

Should Merry Mountain Christmas Parade's Date Be Changed?

Posted by: Peter Schimmelfennig on Friday, March 5, 2010 at 10:59:20 am Comments (4)

We currently have our Merry Mountain Christmas Parade on the 2nd Saturday in December.  It has been suggested that we move the Parade date to the Friday or Saturday after Thanksgiving.  Do you think this is a good idea?  Why or Why Not?

Pro: The Tourism Bureau is willing to advertise and promote the downtown event that weekend in order to draw out of town guests.

Con: That weekend many local folks are out of town visiting family.
